Practicum

As a student in the Masters of Arts in International Education Management Program at the Monterrey Institute of International Studies (MIIS), I participated in a six month practicum.  At the Institute of International Education Latin America (IIE LATAM) in Mexico City, I was able to take the lead on several projects.

Project |01

Project |01 Program Management and Administration of ExxonMobil Scholarship for Research Program

The ExxonMobil Scholarship for Research Program (ERS) grants six outstanding students pursuing their undergraduate degrees in the STEM fields, $2000 each to complete their undergraduate thesis.  Grantees involved in the program are engaged in numerous activities which involve participating in a professional mentorship  program and an English conversation club. In addition, grantees attend two professional career workshops and participate in the ERS awards ceremony and leadership seminar.

As a program division intern, I was selected to carry out all administrative and managerial tasks associated with ERS.

The managerial and administrative tasks that I carried out included being the point of contact for all grantees, designing,  administering and analyzing surveys as well as  creating marketing material  for the program. In addition to the above tasks, coordinating and planning the leadership seminar, awards ceremony,  English conversation club, the trip to the ExxonMobil plant and the mentorship program were other activities that I carried out.

Project | 02 African Heritage Tour Design

As part of IIE Generation Abroad initiative,  I was given the responsibility of  designing the African Heritage  Study Tour.

The African Heritage Study Tour is designed to introduce African Americans to their Afro-Latino counterparts, giving them an opportunity to explore their own identities and learn about others in the region.

Participants of the African Heritage Tour will spend time in Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, and Mexico learning about Afro-Latino heritage.   On the tour, participants will visit prominent universities throughout the region and attend lectures and conferences on the African diaspora in the Americas. Participants will also be engaged in social service activities as well as cultural outings such as learning how to cook traditional African influenced dishes, visiting historical sites and taking dance and music classes.

Project |Application Selection Process: Cargill Global Scholars Program

The Cargill Global Scholars Program is one of the many programs that the Institute of International Education manages that provides lower income students from India, Brazil, United States, China and Russia financial support along with leadership development opportunities through seminars, networking events, and one-on-one mentoring. The institute of International Education Latin America has taken on the responsibility of recruiting participates and managing the Cargill Global Scholars program in Brazil.

My role in the program was conducting the application process and particpating in outreach. My tasks included identifying and contacting Brazilian partner universities and professors to inform them about the program, sorting through applications and ranking them, identifying potential selection committee members and serving as the point of contact for all applicants interested in the program.

In addition, I created an excel worksheet that allowed my fellow co-workers and I to sift through applications easly.
